Robert Frost said "poetry is play with words." I think of painting as play with shapes and colors....after a while you develop your favorite kinds of shapes....repeating them sometimes and then adding a surprise or two. After a while you love shapes so much you feel as if you were eating them as you draw them.

| One of my students said he wanted "something to happen" on the canvas. I want that too. A painter friend of mine said when he looks at a Cezanne it feels like he had a shot of whiskey |

Kandinsky said painting was visual music. Instead of hearing lyrical passages, you see them. Instead of hearing rich harmonies, you see them. Instead of hearing change of key you see it.

When I saw Henri Rousseau's "The Dream" I thought I was in heaven. I have tried to create that transcendental feeling....maybe sometimes getting close, I don't know.
