Tien Training Astronauts Again
August 15, 2005

I was involved in training astronauts again this year. These were the astronaut candidates, class of 2004. Although they are technically called astronauts, probably all of them will become full-fledged astronauts in a couple of years.

We had two sessions of training this year, with half of the class each time. I have been promised group photos by email for both of these events, but haven’t received them yet. In the meantime, there were some reporters at the second training session, and I attach a pdf of the article that came out in the Taos News about it. You’ll see that another interesting thing this year was that we held the exercise on Taos Pueblo land. Several officials from the Pueblo came out to greet the astronauts. Although it is not detailed in the article, apparently Taos Pueblo sent a group of members to Texas after the Columbia disaster to help search for debris. The astronaut candidates were very touched when they learned this.

Of course, I was once again very impressed by the astronauts as people. This year, I had a chance to interact with them more one-on-one during a rock-property exercise that I developed (the Taos News photo was taken during this). NASA also has an extensive education/outreach program and they sent a film crew to the second session of training. I was interviewed for a film they were doing to excite school children to go into science careers. They said they would send me a copy of the whole film when it was done, so we’ll see if my interview does make it in there or not. At any rate, it was an experience!

Hi everyone, Greetings from snowy Colorado!

Here are some pictures from the storm of 2003, March 18-19. The official total for our area in the foothills was 72". However, the snow compacted as it came down so it was really only 4-5 feet that we've had to deal with! That's chest high. We never realized how hard it is to walk through chest high snow!

(Our Houghton, Michigan relatives are probably laughing at us at this point).

We're still home bound after 3 days, but we have power, water, and food, so we're doing well. We've been snow-blowing the road because the truck with the plow on the front keeps getting stuck! Interstate 70 is still closed along our main commute route, but it might open soon.
