Greater Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis)
- enjoying Sue & Glenna's backyard

During migration hundreds of cranes will stop off for days at the Audubon Baker Sanctuary near Sue and Glenna's home.

September to early November, late October is best. Cranes gather each evening in shallow, secluded marshes during migration called staging areas. In the early morning cranes leave their staging areas to feed in nearby fields. In the mid-afternoon (3-5 p.m.) the cranes start returning to spend the night in the safety of the marsh.

Mornings and early afternoons spent driving roads within five miles of the Baker Sanctuary can sometimes be rewarded with finding large flocks of cranes feeding in farm fields.

Our Miniature Pond and Waterfall
Many people think this is just a "water feature," but I am proud to say it has all the aspects of a larger pond including bluegill,
goldfish, frogs, water striders, and 3 types of aquatic plants. The frogs just show up every year and the plants are perrenials.
The sound of the tiny waterfall is very soothing. It's 200 gallons and has a deep end to keep fish alive over the winter
