Joan Allen Suits received her BFA degree in painting from the St. Louis School of Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, with later studies in printmaking and photography. Suits was among the first group of students to study with German expressionist Max Beckmann when he came to St. Louis after escaping Nazi Germany. Since 1949, her paintings have been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions in Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, South Carolina and Georgia. She is represented in many private collections in the United States as well as Europe. Suits currently lives and works in Aiken, South Carolina.
